Spot The Manatee

An American woman in Florida was cited for riding a manatee, which is illegal.

😯 Poor woman. She’ll drown with that sea cow on top of her.

One of those two is an endangered species. The other is an invasive species. Either way, naturalists lose.

“It’s a wild animal. It’s not something to be ridden,” Susan Butler, a manatee expert with the U.S. Geological Survey in Gainesville, told the Times. “I can’t say that as a biologist I would ever, ever condone that, or say that (the manatee) wanted them to do that.”

wtf what about every nature show where someone is heavy petting a shark or whale or anything else

  12. …wouldn’t have been able to tell that was a woman if it hadn’t been stated. Even with the swim top as a tell, her build, skin tone, and the weird shadows on her face make her look like some crazy overweight mexican man decided to get himself a sea pony.

  13. I attended a scientific talk yesterday about the causes of obesity. The speaker, a slender young woman, assured us that fighting obesity was a “health” issue, not an “aesthetic” issue.

    The hell it isn’t….

[heartiste: it’s both. but of course a woman would say that. it would cause too many bad feelings to wipe away self-medicating delusions that men don’t care that much about female beauty and thinness and they all have their own personal tastes anyhow so you go grrl. fact: living a successful happy life as a woman depends in great part on appeasing men’s desires which are fairly universal in composition.]

  16. The sad thing is by todays standards shes not even that fat. I mean compare her to that 1000 lbs sack of human waste on that honey boo boo show and the girl in that pic is a fucking picture of fitness.

  17. The manatee was happy. It thought it had its mother swimming with it. All that adipose tissue felt like home. Plus, it was quite buoyant. The manatee was floating along.

  18. OT, but. Dude. That the article about a bacteria that can separate gold chloride? Your suggestion that it had any bearing on the market value of gold displayed a huge gap in your scientific knowledge. Huge.

I’ll assume you already knew gold is an element, so it can’t be “made” by a bacteria, or anything short of a nuclear reactor.

Ask yourself – if gold chloride was a common natural substance, why wouldn’t we already be separating it via common chemical processes to get the gold? We wouldn’t have waited until someone discovered a bacteria that could do it, we have huge chemical refineries doing it at least a hundred years ago.

Therefore, a knowledge person would conclude, correctly, that gold chloride is NOT a common natural substance.

Being judged when found wanting is what keeps our standards high.
